Earlier today on “Amanpour,”
Amanpour introduced a video clip featuring Angelina Jolie. In her role as
special envoy of the UN High Commissioner to Refugees, she was shown interviewing
Syrian children in a refugee camp in Lebanon. They spoke of the terrible
suffering they had gone through and their continuing nightmares. Next, Amanpour
interviewed Jolie’s UN boss, Antonio Guterres. Her first question was something
along the lines: “You accompanied Angelina Jolie during her trip to Lebanon.
Tell me what made such a profound impression on her there.”
My question to Amanpour
would be: “How could you ask this scripted question with a straight face?” Piers Morgan interviewing Richard Quest, whose exaggerated dramatism could awaken the dead, on the "MYSTERY OF FLIGHT 370" was another low point. I realize these must be acts of desperation which, alas, have temporarily worked to bump up CNN's dismal ratings. As H.
L. Mencken once quipped, no one "has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain
people.” I do
hope in the end CNN will break some new ground here.
